Journal Entry 72 – Can’t Stand It
November 26th (Saturday) 2017
You’ve probably already guessed it from the title, but I’m not standing up! Yep, I’m using my standing desk, a way to get my blood flowing and pumping for where I stand for music other than Christian music
Is it wrong to listen to music that has lyrics from a language that you don't understand?
For example, I was recently listening to an Indian artist, Daler Mehndi, perform some of his Indian songs (despite me not understanding the language) when my mom complained that I shouldn't be listening to music that doesn't have English lyrics (the language I speak) since it could be talking about bad stuff. The same went for some anime (Japanese) openings that I was listening to. (Note that these songs are just for my own personal enjoyment, not things I would play in front of other people).
To try to appease her, I instead listened to some video game music which has no lyrics whatsoever. She then complained again that I should be listening to music with actual words in them and not just "bing bing bong" because it would make me do poorly in English.
When I asked what music she wants me to listen to, all she did was show me these Disney and pop songs (both secular). Sure, there nice, but after hearing the same structure over and over again, you start to get tired of it (especially when those songs are often played over and over again in many public places).
Gospel music is nice, but is it ok to listen to other music too?
[For me, all music you listen to, well, everything in life you do, should be done for the glory of the Lord. So sometimes I listen to really intense music when working out so I can get motivated, or when I need to do crunch time on a big project, and for me, those music genres also bring glory to the Lord. So I can’t say which specific music genres are good and which are bad, since it’s such a general topic. So I say, listen to music you enjoy as you enjoy God].
You probably thought I pasted than in with the Keep Formatting option right? Nope, I’m just a computer programmer (C#) who can recognize that the front that they use on their question page is none other than Consolas. How? Well, each letter actually takes up the same amount of space. This is done in coding so that things can be structured neatly without it being all messed up because an “i” is shorter than an “o”. (If you’re looking for fonts like that, just search up “Monospaced Fonts”, there are others besides Consolas). On the bright side, at least they didn’t follow this Church stereotype...

Ok, that last one was a joke. (Though at this point, I probably made the reference way to obvious lol). Kinda find it funny that when they recommended me one of the following articles, this one is the first that showed up…
Kawaii. (That one I did paste in while Keeping the Formatting). Now that I think about it, find it kinda funny that my mom allows the use of the word “Kawaii” when it’s obviously in a different language. I guess she wants me to understand the lyrics of the song. So she’d probably be kinda ok with anime OPs and EDs when subbed or dubbed, but not with Daler Mehndi because the only way to find a proper translation of some of his less popular work (the other unique ones that aren’t a constant repeat of Tunak Tunak Tun) is with Google Translate.
Anyways, what worries me is that if I have to listen to Christian music all the time in order to earn rewards in Heaven? [Well, all music that is good is Christian music, there’s many different genres of music, so don’t get mixed up with just traditional Christian songs!]

But the official practice of the Catholic Church where they worship Mary instead of Jesus is wrong. Jesus is where our praise must go towards!]

What all of these have in common, especially Jack Hyles one, is that apparently “spanking” is the lotus of all things discipline. That apparently, despite all of the scriptures that talk about molding a good character and setting an example, the only way that a child will ever be disciplined is through spanking.

The reality is spanking is irrelevant for whether a child will become a godly person or not. It cannot save them--only what Jesus did on the cross can do that. It cannot make them worthy of the salvation--no one is worthy. People who were spanked and people who weren't get saved. People who were raised Christian and people who were raised atheist get saved.
Dwight Moody was spanked by
his parents and never spoke against that, but he did not spank his own

That's right. I forgot about that. Dwight Moody, and there were several other
notable preachers that were spanked by their parents that chose not to spank
their own children --- one even said that he wanted to raise his children to
know grace, or something to that effect. I have to go look those up, though, to
get the names. But, they were very prominent and notable leaders and preachers.
I'm sorry I don't know of any prominent Christian leaders who stand against spanking. I think there may be some who oppose it but don't actually speak out against it because it is so entrenched in conservative culture and speaking against it could cause them to be discredited. (I'm not saying they shouldn't speak against it, just that it would be very hard to do so.)

I spanked my child one time and the Lord chastised me all night, didn't sleep a wink. I never did it again.

+Grizzly907LA You do not know me. There are millions of people in the world who were brought up in NON violent homes do not choose to be drug dealers. There is more to choosing your lifestyle than whether or not you are whipped with a belt or backhanded by some adult who has more strength and size than you have as a child. That is why you don't see adults choose to attempt to belt whip or backhand an adult of their own size without consequence of prosecution for assault. I have no hesitation in stating again Another excuse for violence perpetrated by so called "Christians" "Spanking" children is abuse of the vilest kind. I hope that all perpetrators are prosecuted to the highest degree of the law.

So far, I’m still being pulled by both sides. It’s a tough and grueling debate, but I know the answer. I will not spank my kids. Here’s some points why…
Ø Spanking is worldly and traditional, since 80% of parents spank. Do it out of frustration.
Ø GotQuestions can’t be trusted because it needs to rely on conservatives to give it donations
Ø Jesus-is-Savior.com can’t be trusted because he idolizes men.
Ø Studies show that hitting a child is abusive.
Ø Rod means a Shepard’s Rod (Jesus as the good shepard). We are not His slaves, He doesn’t beat us with a plastic whip.
Ø Proverbs was a poetic book with poetic language (hold a knife to your throat for gluttony).

[I applaud you, past me, from 5 years ago! This is future me and I still hold the position that spanking children is evil and physically abusive. But, I think this was the turning point where I stopped trusting Jesus-is-Savior and GotQuestions (mere humans) since they were against Christian Universalism and started to learn more of the Biblical truth, that Universal Salvation through Christ is true, all people will be saved]

I've heard this argument quite a lot and I think it's a pretty simplistic explanation. Life is becoming more complicated in ways that we will never understand through the eyes of our children. If school teachers can get through to 'regular' children, 'difficult' children and 'at risk' children without hitting, there is no good reason parents need to hit their children in order to raise well behaved kids.

Ahhh, Sweden. Beautiful. No wonder I got bullied at school, apparently a bunch of people who went to my Grade school always get, “slippered” by their parents while their at home.
The more pain and headaches I go through reading this, the more I fight against these traditions and break free from them. All of this suffering, cross-referencing all of these articles, will not be in vain.

I now realize why this debate has gotten to me. One of the articles above mentioned that this was high in emotion. It is, it’s someone’s culture, where the developed the personality of who they are today. An attack on that culture is a personal attack towards that person. I just need to not let this get to me, not be a crazy fundamentalist Christian (extreme side of right spectrum), but be in the middle and balanced.
